Hazardous Waste Storage Facility

Department of Defense
For 14 years, HAZMED technicians have operated the 90-Day Temporary Storage Site for all hazardous waste streams at the Aberdeen Proving Ground Army Research Lab (ARL), routinely packaging, over-packing, and labeling to prepare all hazardous wastes for commercial movement to disposal sites.

Waste Minimization Facility
Department of Defense
For 10 years HAZMED technicians have operated an ARL centralized radioactive waste minimization and disposal facility for depleted uranium wastes from ballistics testing.

Radioactive Waste Disposal Cost Analysis
Department of Energy
HAZMED technical staff supported the DOE Headquarters analysis of low-level radioactive waste disposal costs at DOE waste management facilities. This analysis compared and contrasted Nevada Test Site disposal costs to those at five other disposal facilities. The results supported the record of decision for the Low-Level Waste Management Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement.

HAZMART Operation
Department of Defense
HAZMED technicians operate the ARL chemical pharmacy (HAZMART) at Aberdeen Proving Ground. This consolidated chemical and hazardous material pharmacy containing over 18,000 products is designed for positive control over all hazardous materials from ARL research and development operations. The operation tracks all chemical and hazardous materials, substitutes environmentally-friendly products, and minimizes waste effects.

Medical Waste Program Guidance
Environmental Protection Agency
HAZMED, in coordination with the Environmental Law Institute, developed health and safety guidelines for EPA RCRA medical waste inspectors and conducted two RCRA inspection safety courses. Our medical waste experts prepared both guidelines for safe management and disposal of household medical waste and a public service message for pharmacists to distribute to patients using needles and syringes for home health care.
